Like many of the Westport skippers, Dave grew up in the charter fishing business. Starting at age 11, he deckhanded for his dad, Warren, spending summers aboard his charter boat in lure of big salmon. In those days, there were no electronic fish finders or GPS systems to help navigate and find fish. Dave learned from seasoned skippers the skill of finding fish - watching bird life, water patterns, and bait patches where the big fish hang out.

While today Dave's Discovery is loaded with every electronic fishing device, he still relies on his old fashioned skills to find fish. The old salts taught him that when the fish aren't biting you need to "reel um up" and start scouting. As many of our customers will attest, this pays off when Dave discovers yet another patch of mighty Pacific salmon, halibut, or bottom fish.

In the early 70's, Dave worked at the Westport Shipyard and built his first charter boat, the Cachalot II. Later, when his dad Warren built his own boat, Dave took over skippering the Discovery. 1978 was a memorable year for Dave as it was the year his son Adam was born and the year he purchased the Discovery from long time friend, Roger Vann.

Dave has spent many years running charters out of both Westport and Neah Bay, Washington and has a reputation for providing a first class charter. He prides himself on the superb upkeep he does on the vessel and its equipment.

Dave's business is built on return customers. Some of his fishermen and women have fished with him since his deckhand days. Many first time fishers comment on how much fun they have with all the "regular" customers who fish once or twice per week throughout the season.
